One of the best ways to interest young students in mathematics is to show them the relevance of mathematics to the world around them. Many of the math skills introduced in the K-3 classroom – counting, numerical functions, linear measurement, problem solving, modeling, and simple geometry – can help us find answers to real-world questions about nature, our environment and communities. In this hands-on session, the presenters will engage participants in small-group activities that build numeracy skills while encouraging students’ sense of wonder about ecology and geography. Activity formats include creating mathematical models and simple graphs, participating in role-playing simulations and math games. Receive lessons plans matched to state standards.
